Photographer of the Week: Alexander Khokhlov

This week’s PotW is Alexander Khokhlov. Khokhlov is a Russian photographer who uses makeup to alter the appearance of his subjects. I chose Khokhlov because I am currently studying portraiture and was looking for something other than the typical head-and-shoulders shot. I love these shots for their vivid color and weird designs. The first two photos are from his “Wild Soldier” series. I love the juxtaposition of humans and animals, soldiers and strong predators. I think that this juxtaposition speaks volumes about the violence of war. The third photo is from his series “2D or not 2D”. This was one of my favorites from the series. I love the abstractness of makeup design. Without looking closely, you would think that it is a mask. The way that it is drawn is extremely impressive and absolutely beautiful.
